Today’s project is from her “Exploring Notan” chapter.

Notan is a Japanese word that means “dark-light”.  The principle of Notan as it relates to design is defined as the interaction between negative (dark) space and positive (light) space. 

I started with a 5” square piece of black paper.  Then I cut a shape from the side of the paper.  The featured photo is a random free hand design.  Below, I used a stencil and an exacto knife:

Here’s the cool part: no pieces are discarded.  Every piece you cut is glued down as the mirror image from where it was cut out.  Very cool!
